On the party’s 27th day since leaving the fall of Sloobludop and the 35th day since escaping from Velkynvelve, the group finally reaches Neverlight Grove, home to their fellow escapee Stool, a myconid youth.
The group, led by Stool and Jimjar, approach by a natural tunnel formed by a drying underground stream dimly lit by glowing lichen. The tunnel opens above the grove’s main floor, giving the party a panoramic view of the mushroom forest — covering ever surface, floor, walls, ceiling — lit by bioluminescent fungi. On the far side of the cavern, the space narrows to a ravine, a very large mushroom tower visible in the misty distance.
Led by Melech, the party approaches a central reservoir of water, collected from a network of irrigation channels and used to grow fungi. He drinks. Adran then heads toward the distant chamber and impressive tower, and Face picks up the faint sound of melodious music.
Soon, the group encounters two myconid sovereigns. Sovereign Phylo welcomes the party, inviting them to stay the night in order to participate in a celebration of some sort the next day. The group picks up on some concern and confusion from Sovereign Basidia, who — once the party is further away from Sovereign Phylo — encourages the group to leave soon, indicating that a group of “softers” had arrived previously but then, since, disappeared.
Sovereign Basidia shares some concerns about the behavior of other myconids in the grove, and introduces the group to others who share her concerns. They include Loobamub, circle leader of the hunters, who asks for the party’s help dispatching a grick alpha and shambling mound — two creatures threatening the grove.
Meanwhile, Face and Dwight’s sprite familiar sneak past a wall of towering zurkhwoods. There, they find a garden of horror, buried pustulant humanoids, including a drow who warns Face in Undercommon, understood because of a hastily cast Comprehend Languages spell. Face takes a spider medallion before killing the desperate, buried drow. Suddenly, a horrible fungus rolls into view, greeting the two using voice and rapport spores. Several spore servant drow rise out of the soil, and two myconid adults emerge from the stand of zurkhwoods.
Face flees, but the sprite familiar is slain. Learning of the garden of horror and the buried drow, Sovereign Basidia asks the party to explore further beyond the stand of zurkhwoods, offering an early reward: a moldy scroll of protection against fiends.
Regrouping, the party decides to hunt the grick alpha first, hoping to earn the support and friendship of the Circle of Hunters. Sheena hides the gems piled atop Tenser’s Floating Disc as best she can before heading out into the fungal wilds. There, after traveling beyond the border of the grove, the group finds the grick, a large monstrosity that is defeated without much difficulty. The group drags the body back to the grove with some challenge, however, taking quite a bit of time to return — struggling with the grick corpse — to present the body to Loobamub.
