Out of the Abyss

Session 15: Continuing toward Neverlight Grove
The party continues to make its way through the Underdark

The Party

  • Adran, half elf sorceror, 4th level (Liam)
  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 4th level (Milo)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 4th level (Chad)
  • Nordafrost, dwarf rogue, 3rd level (Matt)
  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 4th level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 3rd level (Arden)

Day 12 after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel period of the day, the party encounters a cliff 70 feet high. Sheena scales it to lower a rope ladder, and the party ascends.

Day 14 after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel portion of the day, the party is bedeviled by horrid sounds: terrible shrieks, moans, and incoherent gibbering. Galdorf and Adran are beset by madness, Adran babbling incoherently for a short period of time. That night, the sounds continue, reaching the group even in their sleep. Galdorf and Adran’s madness gains, with Galdorf acquiring ticks and twitches for more than four days and Adran forgetting everything that came before—but remembering who he is—for almost two days. Nordafrost and Melech also become mad for a short period of time.

Day 15 after leaving Sloobludop: At the end of a long travel day, the party rests in a large cavern full of different kinds of wondrous fungi, including rippled mushrooms that smell like rotting meat, globular fungus growing in shallow pools of water, and small button-like mushrooms that look like noses. While resting, the group is approached by a kuo-toa archpriest named Sloopidoop who says he’s on his way toward Sloobludop looking for a friend named Grazilaxx. Sloopidoop describes his friend as having lavender skin and tentacles at his chin. Nordafrost indicates that the group had met Grazilaxx, just outside the kuo-toa village. The archpriest beds down for the night and leaves the group in the morning to continue on his way in search of his friend.

Session 14: Drow slavers catch up
Drow in pursuit of a female shield dwarf accost the party

The Party

Guest DM: Matt

  • Adran, half elf sorceror, 4th level (Liam)
  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 3rd level (Milo)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 4th level (Chad)
  • Naivara, drow fighter, 2nd level (Poppy)
  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 3rd level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 3rd level (Arden)

On the 11th day since fleeing the destruction of Sloobludop, the party approaches a high cliff that blocks the group’s progress. After lowering a rope ladder from the top and starting to ascend, the group is approached by a small group of drow, who attack. They are the forward scouts of a group of drow pursuing the female shield dwarf, Gerina Folin, who the party took in eight days ago.

The party defeats the drow, and the rest of the pursuers catch up. They are led by a drow priestess of Lolth named Shyntyl Melath. Combat continues, and the party eventually defeats Melath and her elite warriors and fellow priestess. Folin dies in the battle.

Afterward, the party scales the cliff ladder and takes a long rest at the top.

Session 13: Bad signs and seeking shelter

The Party

  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 3rd level (Milo)
  • Nordafrost, dwarf rogue, 3rd level (Matt)
  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 3rd level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 3rd level (Arden)

Day Seven after leaving Sloobludop: After a long rest midday following the encounter with the sickeningly explosive beholders, the party continues toward Neverlight Grove. Finding another safe place to take a break, adventurers find a mysterious sigil that the half and wood elves are able to identify as a drow warning sign: “Danger ahead!” Indeed, a slow-moving orange pudding enters the cavern from the tunnel by which the group entered. The party fights off the pudding’s advances — learning that it can shrug off many bladed weapon attacks, as well as electricity — before setting watch for the night.

Day Eight after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel portion of the day, the party has to make its way along a narrow ledge atop an 80-foot-deep ravine. Galdorf loses his footing and falls into the chasm, to be rescued by Sheena and healed by Trazar. The party continues, covering many fewer miles than usual.

Day Nine after leaving Sloobludop: Finding a shelter of duergar construction along a slow-moving stream, the party encounters a large group of slow-moving quaggoth. The group wades to the far side of the stream, avoiding a confrontation. The underbears, not paying any attention to the party, make their way through the cavern and out of sight.

Day 11 after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel portion of the day, the party is accosted by giant fire beetles. The group defeats the beetles and continues on its way.

Session 12: Flight from Sloobudop
Destruction by Leemooggoogoon, and back toward Neverlight Grove -- by land

The Party

  • Adran, half elf sorceror, 4th level (Liam)
  • Bie, mountain dwarf ranger, 4th level (Quinton)
  • Damakos, tiefling paladin, 1st level (Jonah)
  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 3rd level (Milo)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 4th level (Chad)
  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 3rd level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 3rd level (Arden)

Gathering outside the southern gate, the party regroups and flees into the Underdark to avoid the destruction caused by Leemooggoogoon, Demogorgon arisen. The village crumbles and quakes behind them as they depart.

Day One after leaving Sloobludop: The party encounters a solitary traveling stately, erudite humanoid with lavender skin and tentacles around his chin. The traveler asks for news of Sloobludop and expresses surprise that its destruction came “so soon.” He continues on in a hurry, leaving the party, neither helping nor hindering it.

Day Three after leaving Sloobludop: At the end of a long travel day, the party beds down in a cavern full of small glowing crystalline growths. Party members experiment, trying to detach glowing crystals from their host stones — at one point causing one to explode, blinding at least two party members for several minutes. In the middle of the night, during one of the character’s watch shifts, a female shield dwarf tries to sneak through the sleeping party’s camp perimeter. Once stopped and others awakened, she tells her tale: Also held prisoner by the drow, also an escapee, but not from Velkynvelve. She does not know Eldreth but agrees to travel with the party for awhile.

Day Six after leaving Sloobludop: The party encounters a sinkhole, but the party member nimbly steps aside, avoiding its danger.

Day Seven after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel portion of the day, the group comes upon a boneyard of sorts, a low-lying ruined structure full to the rim with bones of all kinds, shapes, and sizes. While skirting the bonepile deadfall, they encounter three beholders, who seem oddly unresponsive and uncommunicative. The beholders brush up against the party at times, and when attacked, explode into dusty, choking clouds. Two party members fall ill inhaling the resulting dust bursts, but are healed by Damakos — including Trazar, who’d become diseased. After dispatching the strange beholders, the group decides to take a long rest midday, bedding down with watch shifts starting at noon — to rise at 8 p.m., or what passes for 8 p.m. in the Underdark.

Session 11: An offering to the Deep Father
The enemy's altar, a sacrifice of red, and a vile uprising

The Party

  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 2nd level (Milo)
  • Naivara, drow fighter, 2nd level (Poppy)
  • Natreion, human barbarian, 3rd level (Michael)
  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 3rd level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 3rd level (Arden)
  • Trugh Bolland, hill dwarf druid, 1st level (Alex)

After making their offerings to the Sea Mother, the party awaits for Ploopploopeen’s plan to unfold. Within the hour, a group of kuo-toa representing the archpriestess of the Deep Father arrives to lead the group — the sacrifice — to the Deep Father’s altar.

Once there, the ceremony begins. Kuo-toa ring the altar, moving, chanting, walking into the shallows of the Darklake on the far side of the altar. As Bloppblippodd calls for the party to be brought forward, Ploopploopeen attacks here, leaping forward.

Battle is joined. Ploopploopeen’s supporters attack Bloppblippodd’s forces, as do the party members. Bloppblippodd’s group returns blows. One by one, however, Bloppblippodd’s supporters fall, the water of the Darklake churning red as something else, unseen, approaches shore, attacking any kuo-toa wandering too close to the water’s edge.

Then, breaking the surface of the Darklake, a 30-foot-tall demon rises from the depths. Its baboon-like heads roaring and oily black tentacles waving, the giant creature approaches shore, lashing out to smash docks and kuo-toa alike. In the tumult, Trugh and Naivara go mad — Trugh attacking anyone nearby until restrained by Sheena, and Naivara running away, terrified.

The party evades marauding bands of kuo-toa whipped into a frenzy by the appearance of the demon prince Leemooggoogoon, as well as a tidal wave caused by the creature’s tentacles slamming down into the Darklake.

At session’s end, Sheena still restrained Trugh. Naivara was nowhere to be found. And the kuo-toa village of Sloobludop slid steadily into madness and destruction as the demon prince laid it to waste.

Session 10: The enemy of my enemy
Surprising allies, an intriguing offer, and the gate to Sloobludop

The Party

  • Adran, half elf sorceror, 3rd level (Liam)
  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 2nd level (Milo)
  • Naivara, drow fighter, 2nd level (Poppy)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 3rd level (Chad)

  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 3rd level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 3rd level (Arden)
  • Vermis, wood elf ranger, 3rd level (Andrew)

After a sleep period following their encounter with the hostile group of kuo-toa, the party continues its way toward Sloobludop led by Jimjar. It is the 10th day since leaving Velkynvelve. The party confronts Jimjar asking why he didn’t tell them he planned to take them there, and he explains that he knew they’d be against the idea — but that securing boat passage and a guide in the kuo-toa village will speed their journey to Neverlight Grove. Instead of taking 16 more days to get there, it should now only take four or five across the water.

As the group continues toward Sloobludop, it meets another group of kuo-toa. Melech attacks immediately, resulting in combat; Natreion wades into the fray in a frenzied rage. After several rounds of fighting, the group’s apparent leader disengages, shouting for the party to stop its attack: “Please stop attacking us! We mean you no harm. We wish to escort you safely to Sloobludop — and have an offer to make you!” he calls out, several times louder than he should be able to shout, and in Common.

The fight ends, and the two groups parlay. Ploopploopeen, an archpriest of the Sea Mother, explains the recent uprising of a rival religious faction led by his daughter, Bloppblippodd. That faction worships the Deep Father, or Leemooggoogoon, proclaiming him a new god. The followers of the Deep Father have been making an increasing number of sacrifices, casting the remains into the Darklake, where it is consumed by… something. And Bloppblippodd’s powers are on the rise.

Ploopploopeen explains his plan: Escort the party unbound and still armed into the village. Bring them to the Altar of the Deep Father as a sacrifice. And with the party’s help, cut off the head of the new cult. The party agrees — for a price and passage across the Darklake — and the groups continue to Sloobludopp.

Once there, Ploopploopeen takes the group to the Shrine of the Sea Mother, where recent convert Galdorf vomits at her feet and Adran soils his robes, twice. The archpriest offers the group 500 gold pieces and two potions that might aid their journey if they help him with his plan.

Session 9: Slouching toward Sloobludop
Jimjar's revelation, cliffs and ladders, and meeting the fish men

The Party

  • Adran, half elf sorceror, 3rd level (Liam)
  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 1st level (Milo)
  • ??? (Poppy)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 3rd level (Chad)

  • Sheena, half elf rogue, 2nd level (Igor)
  • Trazar, wood elf cleric, 2nd level (Arden)
  • Vermis, wood elf ranger, 2nd level (Andrew)

On the seventh day, the travel portion of the day is uneventful. That afternoon, the party encounters a sheer cliff face 40 feet high. Easily scaling the wall, Vermis and Sheena lower a ladder to the rest of the party below. After setting up camp, seven giant fire beetles enter the party’s cavern scavenging for food. Detecting a fresher source of sustenance, the beetles attack — and are defeated by the stalwart adventurers.

On the eighth day since leaving Velkynvelve, the party approaches another cliff and ladder, this time from the top rather than the bottom. And the evening brings another thirsty giant roctopus, which Galdorf lets drink from a nearby stream and then depart.

It is on the next day that Jimjar tells the party that he’s been leading them toward Sloobludop, a kuo-toa village on the shore of the Darklake. It is there that they should be able to secure boat passage and a guide across the lake — the fastest route to Neverlight Grove. As the party approaches the village, a group of eight kuo-toa attack, attempting to capture the party. Seven attack with spears and nets, and one attacks unarmed, bringing down thunder and lightning with his mighty blows. The party defeats the group of kuo-toa and uncertainly continues their approach to Sloobludop.

  • Galdorf, half elf sorceror, 1st level (Milo)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 3rd level (Chad)
  • Natreion, human barbarian, 3rd level (Michael)

  • Vermis, wood elf ranger, 2nd level (Andrew)

The party barely survives fighting their drow pursuers: Ilvara, Asha, and Jorlan. Those remaining conscious stabilize their comrades and set watch for the night.

On the sixth day since escaping Velkynvelve, the group encounters another steam vent during the travel portion of the day. At night, having set up camp to rest, the party is met by two myconid adults who don’t communicate much — and are surprisingly quickly defeated. The killing of the two myconids causes Stool to distant himself from the party. He continues to travel with the group toward Neverlight Grove, but he’s no longer as friendly — and no longer lets the group know whether others are approaching, for fear that the party will attack additional of his kind.

Before bedding down for the night, the group encounters a shambling mound. And Vermis experiences a short-lived bout of madness. Realizing that the party is now out of food — there are no rations left in any of their packs after six days of travel and sharing food — the group decides it will have to forage from now on. Vermis finds enough food for the next day, and the party rests uneasily despite the defeat of their pursuers.

  • Vermis, wood elf ranger, 2nd level (Andrew)

Warned by Stool of the approach of someone at the edge of his awareness, the party and fellow escapees bed down for the night, setting a dual watch. During the first hour of guard duty, a drow scout approaches the party, drawing bow fire from the guards, who shout to wake the others. Natreion sleeps deeply, taking several rounds to wake, as additional scouts approach.

The party defeats the guards and returns to sleep, setting watch again. They are therefore not surprised by the arrival of the pursuer group’s rear guard: Ilvara, high priestess of Lolth; a junior priestess named Asha; and Ilvara’s former consort, the elite warrior Jorlan. Combat erupts again. The party is blasted by an infestation of biting locusts, with several falling. Even Jorlan almost succumbs to the plague of insects.

At the end of the evening, about half the party was down, Ilphilkir had emerged from the cloud of locusts to face Ilvara directly, and the remaining adventurers had emerged from the far side of the cloud.

After encountering the four silent duergar at the bridge, the party takes a long rest before continuing. The next few days making their way through the Underdark are eventful:

Day Two after leaving Velkynvelve: The travel day, led by Jimjar, passes uneventfully. Upon setting up camp and setting the night’s watch, however, the party is interrupted by an erupting steam vent and a passing-by giant creature with many limbs — like an octopus, but landborn. The heroes defeat the giant roctopus and make it through the rest of the night, sleeping on hard, cold rock.

Day Three: During the travel day, the party finds its way blocked by an extremely deep gorge, several hundred feet across. The gorge runs in either direction for some way. Rather than lowering themselves into the darkness, the group decides to make their way along it to find another route. This cuts the group’s travel distance in half this day. The night passes without incident.

Day Four: After a long travel day, the group sets up camp along a stagnant underground stream beside some duergar ruins. During the night’s watch, a solitary giant roctopus makes its way to water’s edge to drink. The guard on duty watches it from the shadows, quiet, not interrupting, and it continues on its way, thirst wetted.

Day Five: While traveling through the Underdark, the group is beset by horrid sounds, which affect Vermis in particular. We stopped play in what might be afternoon, before ending the day’s travel, and before establishing camp for the night—the party just alerted by Stool to the presence of someone, or something at the edge of his awareness.
