  • Sheena, half-elf rogue, 5th level (Igor)
  • Vermis, wood elf ranger, 4th level (Andrew)

Day 15 after leaving Neverlight Grove: During the travel portion of the day, the party comes across another Warning Sign, a drow insignia meaning “Demons ahead!” The rest of the day passes uneventfully.

Day 17 after leaving Neverlight Grove: At a major intersection, the party comes upon Pickshine Mine, where they meet its overseer Dasco Pickshine. He asks the group to accompany a load of ore to Blingdenstone as added security in exchange for a letter of passage into the city. He suggests that they might have trouble getting in otherwise due to some recent concerns.

Upon reaching the stairs and the main gate to the city, the group presents its letter, Jimjar as their guide, and the ore for delivery. A group of guards leads the party through the maze into Blingdenstone proper. In the reception hall, Sheena tries to pick a lock on a door to the west, but a guard stops him, guiding the group to the Traders’ Grotto.

There, Sheena cashes in some of her gems, and the party acquires some replacement crossbow bolts. As they go about their trade, two gelatinous cubes emerge from a tumble-down passageway to the west, lifting a screaming deep gnome high. The party attacks, defeating the two cubes, freeing the svirfneblin, and finding a short sword. Vermis claims the sword.

Continuing to the Ruby in the Rough, thinking someone at the temple can help identify the sword, the group meets Glyphic Shroomlight and the ghostly Burrow Warden Jadger, who asks the party for help. The party makes its way to the Staging Area, where Sark Axebarrel and his team let the party pass through the doors into Rockblight.

Meandering through some Abandoned Residences, the party encounters a ghostly presence who, after several rounds of combat, says, “They are coming! Everyone must hide!” before disappearing into a tumble-down hovel. There, the group finds a stone bed, a deep gnome skeleton beside it, its arm reaching under the bed.

There, they find a handful of gems and a potion. Thinking the remains might be those of Udhask, the group returns to Jadger, completing the first of two requests.

Session 23: Beyond Neverlight Grove
Leaving the myconid community, the party heads toward Blingdenstone

The Party

  • Adran, half-elf sorceror, 4th level (Liam)
  • Face, tiefling bard, 3rd level (Alice)
  • Melech, tiefling warlock, 4th level (Chad)
  • Rassan, human monk, 4th level (Matt)

Led by Sovereign Basidia, two circles of myconids evacuate Neverlight Grove, concerned about the incursion of Zuggtmoy. The party joins the myconids in their exodus, returning into the Underdark led by Jimjar. Their new destination: Blingdenstone, some 16 days away.

Day One after leaving Neverlight Grove: During the travel portion of the day, the group makes its way through a large, wondrous fungus cavern. There, the party finds five sheets of ripplebark growing on the walls. Face claims two of the as trail rations.

Day Five after leaving Neverlight Grove: While traveling, the group reaches the edge of a large expanse of web, stretching for several miles in either direction, and perhaps half a mile ahead of them. There, they meet two entrepreneurial goblins, Yuk Yuk and Spiderbait, who offer to lead the group across the multiple paths of web for 2 gp per person per day (or portion thereof). Sheena and Vermis are skeptical but trust the guides, who do indeed lead them safely across. Melech falls when a web snaps, but Face casts Featherfall, and he floats safely down to the next layer of web.

Day Six after leaving Neverlight Grove: Just before starting to look for a campsite for the night, the party has to traverse a narrow ledge 40’ above the ground below. Several party members fall, but Face casts Featherfall quickly, and each is easier rescued using Vermis’s rope. Upon crossing the ledge, the group runs into Sloopidoop, the kuo-toa archpriest they encountered previously. They share news and experiences, and he continues on his way.

Day Eight after leaving Neverlight Grove: During the travel portion of the day, the group comes across an area of ruins, several structures still identifiable. Looking for treasure, the party finds two trinkets: a tooth from an unknown beast that seems to be half tiger and half lion, as well as a folding fan that shows the picture of a sleeping cat. There, the adventurers are ambushed by several grick, which the party defeats. That night, before setting up camp, the group finds a drow warning sign and is attacked by two shadow demons. The group defeats the demons.

Day Nine after leaving Neverlight Grove: In the evening, the group encounters several shield dwarf commoners, recent escapees from drow slavers. With the agreement of Eldeth, the party takes them in as fellow travelers.

Day 10 after leaving Neverlight Grove: Before making camp, the group meets a surprisingly well-dressed and -spoken troglodyte who’s looking for his friends Sloopidoop and Grazilaxx, both of whom the group has met previously. Repulsed, the group lets him pass unchallenged.

Session 22: The terrible, blight wedding
The party returns to the Garden of Welcome, where it finds new horrors

The Party

  • Bardryn Ironfist, hill dwarf cleric, 1st level (Rocio)
  • Galdorf, half-elf sorceror, 4th level (Milo)
  • Greengold, wood elf druid, 1st level (Shobha)
  • Naivara, dark elf fighter, 2nd level (Poppy)
  • Rassan, human monk, 4th level (Matt)
  • Rorth, mountain dwarf cleric, 1st level (David)
  • Sheena, half-elf rogue, 5th level (Igor)

Making their way back toward the Garden of Welcome, the party — accompanied by four myconid adults — steps beyond the stand of zurkhwoods and sees a group of myconids moving and dancing toward the giant cavern, the Circle of Masters, and the giant mushroom reaching to the ceiling. Several spore servant drow and two myconid adults notice and converge on the adventurers, attracting the attention of the horrible fungus encountered by Face earlier.

The drow, myconids, and rolling horror attack the party. Rorth is downed but revived with a potion, and the adventurers defeat the horrors. One of the myconid comrades thinks the rolling fungus has some features of a sovereign named Yestabrod. They return to the Inner Circle, where Sovereign Basidia again asks them to explore beyond the garden. The party returns, finding that the rolling fungus’ corpse has been removed — and hearing music in the distance.

Moving into the far cavern, the party and myconid comrades witnesses what seems to be a wedding ceremony or ritual, joining two myconids in an obscene marriage presided over by the corpse of the rolling fungus — moved by several other myconids like a puppet. After Araumycos and Zuggtmoy are joined in marriage, the procession moves on toward the tower.

One of the party members recognizes Zuggtmoy as the name of the Demon Queen of Fungi, Lady of Rot and Decay. The dwarves know that Araumycos — dwarvish for “great fungus” — is a legendary fungal growth believed to have caused the abandonment of dwarven mines and communities underground.

Returning to Sovereign Basidia, the party shares what is has seen. She is alarmed and begins to gather those myconids from the circles still loyal to her to leave Neverlight Grove before it is too late. The party decides to join the exodus, to follow Jimjar on to Blingdenstone — a 16-day journey — and then the surface world.

Before leaving, Sheena returns to where she’d hidden the party’s gems. She finds the hiding place disturbed, and all but eight gems gone. The party prepares to leave.

Guest DM: Matt

Here’s a quick rundown of what happened: The party delivered the grick back to the Sovereign myconids, then went off to fight the shambling mound. Galdorf went and poked at it with his quarterstaff to test if it indeed was a monster and was nearly taken out by the shambling mound after it engulfed him. The rest of the party kept their distance for the most part and just used range weapons. Two players visiting from Spain went up to fight the mound and were somewhat effective.

After dispatching the shambling mound, the party returned to the Sovereign myconids. Sheena asked for the quickest and safest path out. The rest of the party expressed interest in going to the wedding ceremony and fighting the monsters there. The leader of the Circle of Hunters said he would help, and provide four myconid servants to aid in the battle.

On the party’s 27th day since leaving the fall of Sloobludop and the 35th day since escaping from Velkynvelve, the group finally reaches Neverlight Grove, home to their fellow escapee Stool, a myconid youth.

The group, led by Stool and Jimjar, approach by a natural tunnel formed by a drying underground stream dimly lit by glowing lichen. The tunnel opens above the grove’s main floor, giving the party a panoramic view of the mushroom forest — covering ever surface, floor, walls, ceiling — lit by bioluminescent fungi. On the far side of the cavern, the space narrows to a ravine, a very large mushroom tower visible in the misty distance.

Led by Melech, the party approaches a central reservoir of water, collected from a network of irrigation channels and used to grow fungi. He drinks. Adran then heads toward the distant chamber and impressive tower, and Face picks up the faint sound of melodious music.

Soon, the group encounters two myconid sovereigns. Sovereign Phylo welcomes the party, inviting them to stay the night in order to participate in a celebration of some sort the next day. The group picks up on some concern and confusion from Sovereign Basidia, who — once the party is further away from Sovereign Phylo — encourages the group to leave soon, indicating that a group of “softers” had arrived previously but then, since, disappeared.

Sovereign Basidia shares some concerns about the behavior of other myconids in the grove, and introduces the group to others who share her concerns. They include Loobamub, circle leader of the hunters, who asks for the party’s help dispatching a grick alpha and shambling mound — two creatures threatening the grove.

Meanwhile, Face and Dwight’s sprite familiar sneak past a wall of towering zurkhwoods. There, they find a garden of horror, buried pustulant humanoids, including a drow who warns Face in Undercommon, understood because of a hastily cast Comprehend Languages spell. Face takes a spider medallion before killing the desperate, buried drow. Suddenly, a horrible fungus rolls into view, greeting the two using voice and rapport spores. Several spore servant drow rise out of the soil, and two myconid adults emerge from the stand of zurkhwoods.

Face flees, but the sprite familiar is slain. Learning of the garden of horror and the buried drow, Sovereign Basidia asks the party to explore further beyond the stand of zurkhwoods, offering an early reward: a moldy scroll of protection against fiends.

Regrouping, the party decides to hunt the grick alpha first, hoping to earn the support and friendship of the Circle of Hunters. Sheena hides the gems piled atop Tenser’s Floating Disc as best she can before heading out into the fungal wilds. There, after traveling beyond the border of the grove, the group finds the grick, a large monstrosity that is defeated without much difficulty. The group drags the body back to the grove with some challenge, however, taking quite a bit of time to return — struggling with the grick corpse — to present the body to Loobamub.

Before they can move through the party’s campsite, an alarm is raised and the party wakes. The group doesn’t take long to defeat the drow.

Day 24 after leaving Sloobludop: The party finds a campsite for the night in a patch of fungi, including several giant zurkhwoods. While on watch, a party member thinks they see two of the zurkhwoods change position. They don’t seem to do anything otherwise, and it’s unclear whether they actually moved, or how far. Later in the watch order, the party is beset by several one-eyed, clawed creatures. The adventurers slay the aberrations.

Day 25 after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel portion of the day, while scouting ahead, Vermis, Xon, and Dwight’s sprite familiar spy several more one-eyed aberrations approaching the party. Warning the rest of the group, those ahead attack the creatures. Xon falls but is revived after the battle ends.

Day 26 after leaving Sloobludop: While traveling, the party passes through a very large fungi patch dominated by beautiful bluecap mushrooms. The day is otherwise uneventful as the group nears the end of its journey to Neverlight Grove, myconid home of their fellow escapee Stool.

A fight breaks out, the party victorious.

Day 20 after leaving Sloobludop: The group comes across a cavern with a very high ceiling, unseen. In the center is an enormous pile of bones, all sizes and shapes. The bones are clean. Trazar spends some time digging in the pile, but finds nothing other than a small jack-shaped bone. He takes it with him.

Day 21 after leaving Sloobludop: In a wondrous fungus cavern, the party meets a small group of kuo-toa gathering mushrooms. Using Thaumaturgy, Melech shouts at the kuo-toa, trying to scare them away. They run.

Having struggled against the gnolls, the party decided not to track down the hook-armed monstrosities. Instead, they continued on their way to Neverlight Grove, following the lead of Jimjar.

That night, when finding a place to bed down for the night, one of the party notices the scent of some kind of gas, and Rassan’s torch sputters, before the cavern fills with burning gas, injuring the party. The group moves to another area, finding somewhere without gas, to sleep. There, they encounter a group of goblin raiders. The party defeats the raiders.

Day 17 after leaving Sloobludop: During the travel portion of the day, the party encounters a group of deep gnomes, traders, two riding atop giant lizards. They are wary of the party, which initially intends to pass by. A couple of party members ask what the traders are selling and learn that they are gem farmers. They buy a couple of small stones, and then Sheena attempts to pickpocket one using Mage Hand. That deep gnome notices, and a fight breaks out.

The adventurers slay the traders, as well as the lizards. Unlocking the lock boxes and chests carried by the lizards, the party finds a wealth of gems, almost none of which they can carry having slain the lizards.

A group of dog-faced humanoids soon appear, shouting something the party doesn’t understand except for the name “Yeenoghu.” The party fights the creatures, with Galdorf casting Comprehend Languages so he could understand what they were cackling: “Sacrifices for Yeenoghu!” Galdorf also casts a spell that creates a thick area of fog. Magic is widely used: Galdorf casting Thunder Wave, and Melech casting Shatter, accidentally hitting a couple of his comrades. Eventually, the dog-faced humanoids are defeated.

Nordafrost falls as two of the party leave the group to explore a side passage down which the hook-armed monstrosities ran.
